Test_Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

Carol S. Dweck
How your beliefs shape your success
I first read this book when I was 16. It took 3 or 4 goes at it over the next decade for it to really sink it. Over the years, this book has helped silence the unhelpful noise in my head, and focus on the right things – the things I can control.
In a Nutshell
Mindset explains the difference between proving yourself and developing yourself. Dweck distinguishes between a “fixed mindset” – where every setback becomes a measurement of your worth – and a “growth mindset” – where every challenge or failure becomes part of the development process.
What landed for me
- How toxic and limiting my old definition of success was.
- It helped me focus on the right things — and actually enjoy the process of achieving my goals.
- It cured my analysis paralysis and encouraged me to take risks that led to big breakthroughs.
Where I’d add nuance
- Growth mindset is hard to access when your nervous system is dysregulated.
- Growth mindset can become another stick to beat yourself with if you interpret Dweck’s work as “just try harder.”
- A growth mindset doesn’t replace the need to understand how you’re wired and create the conditions where effort feels effortless.
Favourites Quotes
- “Becoming is better than being.”
- “Success is about being your best self, not about being better than others.”
- “When Do You Feel Smart: When You’re Flawless or When You’re Learning?”
