Test_How to Find Balance in the Age of Indulgence
Dr. Anna Lembke breaks down why modern life keeps pushing us toward overstimulation, compulsive consumption, anxiety, and burnout — and why the solution isn’t more discipline, but restoring balance inside the brain’s dopamine system.
Dr. Anna Lembke
Anna helped me understand why my insatiable pursuit of pleasure can leave me feeling depressed, depleted, and burnt out if left unmanaged.
In a Nutshell
- Anna explains how dopamine drives our motivation and behaviour in the simplest, most engaging way.
- She explains why the things we do, to make ourselves feel better, often make us feel worse…
- And why addiction, self-sabotage, and underperformance is less about self-discipline — and more about dopamine regulation.
What landed for me
- The intrinsic link between pleasure and pain — and how the wrong kinds of pleasure can completely f*ck up your life.
- How my brain works — and what I can do to improve my focus, motivation, and overall fulfilment.
- I need to be selective and intentional about the pleasure and pain I experience, otherwise other people and platforms choose for me.
Where I’d add nuance
- I don’t recommend dopamine fasting as a blanket solution for ADHDers, because baseline dopamine levels are already irregular.
- ADHDers need to regulate their dopamine system more holistically — which is why I created my Dope OS course.
- The real goal is not to remove pleasure, but to regulate dopamine in a way that aligns with who you want to be.

“The reason that we’re all so miserable is because we’re working so hard to avoid being miserable.”
